Some music conks you over the head and demands your attention. This goes straight through your heart.
There is a subtlety, beauty and passion in the self titled CD from the Ann Arbor, Michigan Band, Wandering Sailors. After releasing their debut CD in the Spring of 1994 on the Wandering Off label, the band recently recorded in San Francisco with acclaimed producer Scott Mathews. Mr. Mathews' extensive resume includes producing albums by John Hiatt, Dick Dale, John Westley Harding, Trip Shakespeare, Roseanne Cash and many others. The song, "Fear", available here for sampling, is from this new material.
Brothers Bob Bernstein and Mr. Charlie, playing guitar and bass respectively, do not believe in musical ear candy and claim to be quite disillusioned with most of what they hear. " We know our music is timeless," Bob comments, "...and not just some flavor of the month. We want our audience to feel like this music is coming from deep in the soul, because it is."
The music of the Wandering Sailors has been variously described as;
"...[having] the same vaguely wistful, elegiac, lost-cause majesty of, say, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
"Jangly acoustic guitars and doomful atmospheric electrics."
"...the Bernstein's vocals recall a slightly perverse Cat Stevens."
The self titled CD contains numerous, "...strange folky gems." -David Dudley, City Paper, Baltimore, Maryland.
With the addition of Blake Nordman's solid, tasteful beats, the Wandering Sailors have been smoothly navigating the rock and roll sea.
